The plot takes place before the Battle of Changsha and tells the tale of a man who, in his quest to discover who killed his father, learns to fight for a higher cause—the unsung heroes of that period.

The Japanese use the ‘black butler,’ a clandestine Chinese spy who has been active for fifteen years, to execute a carefully orchestrated deception in their pursuit of Changsha. Communist Party of China underground member Yun Mu Zhi meets his untimely end while investigating the “black butler.” Returning to their birthplace of Changsha, Yun Hong Shen sets out to find the person responsible for his father’s murder, all the while unaware of his father’s real identity.

A fellow soldier and friend of his father offers him assistance. In the face of overwhelming difficulties, Yun Hong Shen teams up with a young woman named Wen Ye Ming, whose patriotism drives her to fight. Putting aside his vengeance, Yun Hong Shen plays a dangerous game with Japanese operatives to help his nation win the war.
